Year 2009
Sumo was made for the EcoDesign Exhibition in Helsinki, Finland. The chair is covered with Tärnsjö leather and filled with buckwheat shells. Tärnsjö leather is organically tanned using vegetable-based processes for minimal impact on the environment. Buckwheat is an ecologically cultivated herb used in cooking and baking. Buckwheat shells or hulls cannot be used for cooking and for this reason they are usually considered a waste product.
This “after dinner chair” is an experiment using renewable and biodegradable materials that, to a large degree, are waste products from food production. Basically, the chair has the same form as a conventional chair, but is then filled to the limit with padding to create the unique Sumo shape.
